EVEN the latest version of the iPhone — the 6s — has not dealt with users’ biggest gripe — a short battery life.
1. PUT YOUR IPHONE IN AIRPLANE MODE
We know it’s a radical idea to put your precious iPhone in airplane mode when you’re not actually in the body of a Boeing 747, but hear us out.
Doing this turns off your phone’s Wi-Fi and mobile radios, and also closes applications that need these features to run in the background. All this contributes to more energy saving and faster recharging.
You can’t actually make or receive calls and text messages, or use the internet when you’re in airplane mode, but your device will have a lot more juice in a lot shorter time frame if you do use this trick.
To change your iPhone to airplane mode, go to “Settings” and toggle the switch.
2. PUT YOUR IPHONE FACEDOWN
No, this isn’t just to avoid seeing any Snapchats likely to make you gag, there’s actually some logic behind this move.
Keeping your iPhone 6s facedown stops your screen from lighting up every time you have a notification — an iOS 9 feature called Facedown Detection.
iPhone Hacks suggested this can improve your battery life by up to an hour. Who would have thought?
3. CHARGE YOUR IPHONE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE
We don’t expect many of you to whack your phone in the fridge or the oven when it comes to charging time, but making sure it avoids any excessive cold or heat is another step to maximising its charging potential.
The iPhone 6s has a lithium-ion battery, and a study by Battery University — an educational website offering hands-on battery information — found that if it is exposed to temperatures above 30C, the battery’s materials will become stressed and diminish its lifespan.
Cold climates are no better for the battery, and are to be avoided too. So if you’re thinking about using a portable charger, think again.
Instead, just find a nice, pleasant, indoor place for your iPhone to charge.
4. PUT YOUR IPHONE IN LOW POWER MODE
This isn’t as effective as using airplane mode, but it still helps speed up the charging process by disabling battery-draining features like Siri and automatic downloads.
Your iPhone will ask if you want to switch to low power mode when your battery drops below a certain level, but it can also be turned on manually whenever you want.
To do this, go to Settings > Battery > Low Power mode.
5. USE A 2.1 AMP WALL CHARGER
You know that wall charger that came in the pack along with your brand new iPhone 6s? Don’t use it.
It’s not quite up to the task of re-energising your phone in the same way a more powerful 2.1 amp charger — the one normally used for iPads — is.
Using the heavy duty charger will have you back tweeting, texting and Snapchatting in no time.
